When our tutors were asked the following questions, this is how they responded:
- Hobbies:
- traveling, reading, movies, and anything I can do with my family and crazy pets.
Why do you want to be a tutor?
- I have taken a year off from teaching to pursue tutoring. I want to provide more help to each student than I am able to when I have thirty students an hour that each have their own needs. I feel I can be more effective and provide assistance that is much more beneficial if I work in a small group or one-on-one setting.
Why should a student pick you?
- I have a lot of experience helping students who are struggling. I can break down a task into understandable chunks. I know several different ways to explain a skill. Because of my last name, my past students nicknamed me 'The Ruffanator'. We always worked hard in my class but never forgot to have fun and take time to laugh!
Personal Statement:
- I believe everybody can learn. Some might need more time, a different way of looking at things, help organizing, a new way to study, and of course, some encouragement. I know what it feels like to 'not get it' and I want to help.
Any Last Words?
- I have been a classroom teacher for 21 years. I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade. For the last several years, I have been responsible for all the math instruction for the sixth grade at Porter Elementary. I have also tutored up to algebra 1 and geometry. I have been on several math and science related district committees. I have been grade level chair, and on numerous committees at my school. I really want to provide help for struggling students. Often, the best time of my day was when I got to work with small groups or even just one kid after school.
