Free Responses:
When our tutors were asked the following questions, this is how they responded:
- Hobbies:
- I have a picture of my cat and bird drinking together from the same bowl. I've raised love bird chicks, feeding them with an eye dropper. This makes them more loving pets. I also do calligraphy.
Why do you want to be a tutor?
- I have been an education therapist for the past five years. I thoroughly enjoy it. It is an awesome experience to have my student master a concept which was previously eluding him or her. I have the ability to break things down into meaningful units. In fact, I even wrote workbooks and instruction guides for a software company in New York City. The first student I tutored, many years before I became an educational therapist, was getting C's and D's in math. After I worked with her for a few months she received an A for the next quarter. She was a motivated student and an inspiration for me.
Why should a student pick you?
- I've been an educational therapist for the past 5 years. Educational therapists determine a student's weakness and work toward filling in any holes in the student's knowledge base. I've worked with a lot of students, from gifted to those with learning disabilities. I helped them discover their capabilities and make significant gains and master new material.
Students experiencing a blockage or who have a learning disability need explicit systematic instruction with plenty of opportunities for practice. They benefit from multi-sensory approaches. I also take concepts and break them down into smaller more meaningful units. Each component is taught to mastery and then combined into a whole concept. There are also many mnemonics devices and visualization techniques which make memorization easier. I also use scientifically evidenced based methods including multi-sensory and Orton-Gillingham methods. The combination of these state of the art tools, will help your student to succeed.
Personal Statement:
- To be an effective tutor requires patience, acceptance, and an empathetic relationship. Patience is necessary because, learning a concept requires exposing the student to the same concept multiple times. The concept often has to be repeated using different approaches. Acceptance is important because, the student must feel it is OK to be at a particular point on the learning curve in order to succeed. Finally, an empathetic relationship is important because, the student must feel cared about and understood.
Any Last Words?
- In the world we live in, learning is a lifelong process. It is important to learn new skills all the time. In order to do that effectively, a student needs to learn how to learn. Reading and math are critical skills in this computer age. It is crucial that the student experience success and satisfaction during the learning process, in order to develop a love of learning.
